He entered the medical school at the University of Milan, but after enlisting in the military, he did not return to medicine but instead went into the business world. From 1957 to 1964, he worked as a window dresser and buyer at the Milan department store "La Rinasciante". Armani was knowledgeable about the designs and materials that consumers wanted, as well as the production process and distribution, and after being scouted, he was appointed designer of Cerruti's menswear line "Hitman" in 1965. He learned design from Nino Cerruti.
