Emanuel Ungaro was born in Aix-en-Provence, Bouches-du-Rhône, southern France, in 1933. In 1957, at the age of 23, he moved to Montparnasse, Paris, and in 1958 began working as an assistant to Balenciaga. This was on the recommendation of Courrèges. He said, "My encounter with Balenciaga was truly shocking, an encounter with wisdom, rigor, strength, and greatness."
In 1965, he went independent and started his own brand, Emanuel Ungaro, with his girlfriend at the time, fabric artist Sonia Knapp.
In 1990, at the age of 50, he married Laura Fafani, whose father was the president of Italy's national television station.
In 1996, the brand was sold to Salvatore Ferragamo.
In 2010, Giles Deacon was announced as creative director.
In 2012, the company signed an exclusive partnership agreement with the Italian Aeffe Group, which also operates Alberta Ferretti, Moschino, and Pollini.
